'The SPYROS was a 40-year old Greek steamer. Not much is known about her, other than on 20 December 1920 she was on her voyage from Newcastle for St Ives. When in a position off the Isle of Wight, according to a newspaper account: 'SPYROS sprang a leak and foundered about 11 miles south of St Catherines's Point. The crew of 11 took to the ship's boats, and after rowing about in the Channel landed st Hurst Castle in the early hours of Monday. Having rowed for some 35 miles they were somewhat exhausted. They were made comfortable by the coastguards and left later in the day for London'. (5)
