The Essex Historic Environment Record (EHER) is maintained by the Historic Environment Branch of Essex County Council. The county council has long-term policies to safeguard and enhance the historic environment. The work of the Branch is designed to implement these policies through recording, studying, managing and promoting the historic environment. The historic environment of Essex is remarkably diverse. Examples include some of the oldest Palaeolithic sites in Britain, extensive areas of preserved prehistoric land surface in the inter-tidal zone, a great concentration of medieval moated sites in the north-west of the county, and numerous military buildings and earthworks relating to the Second World War. There are a number of enhancement projects being carried out, which aim to improve the quality of the information available about certain types of site. These include 20th century defences, sites found from aerial photography, historic landscapes and industrial archaeology.
