The Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record is a key information source for every aspect of the historic environment within the modern county. It originated in 1973 and consists of a database linked to digital mapping, with the digital records comprising summaries of the more detailed physical resource held by the HER. The HER contains information on all known archaeological sites, historic buildings and historic landscape features within the county. It includes more than 65,000 records of all periods from the earliest human activity to the present day, including stray finds and industrial remains. All Scheduled Monuments and Listed Buildings are recorded together with historic landscapes, historic parks and gardens, battlefields and field systems. Buried remains and many demolished buildings are also included. The HER is continuously enhanced and updated with new sites and further information about already known sites.
The hard copy collection held by the HER includes an extensive library, which includes books, journals and unpublished excavation reports (grey literature) as well as a large archive of secondary sources, including plans, illustrations and photographs, both aerial photography and images of individual sites and buildings.
