The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our

Full Description
Ivy House in Post Office Road is an unlisted detached brick house of one and a half storeys. It has dormer windows with barge boards facing the road, and many windows have sashes. There is some decorative brick work on the walls and chimneys <1>.
On the First Edition OS map of 1879 the house is shown within an unnamed small yard <2>, and it is likely to have served as a farmhouse to a smallholding. A well to the right of the front porch is shown on the Second Edition map of 1899 <3>. The farmyard and outbuildings had been greatly extended, especially to the north-west, by the time of the Third Edition map of 1911 <4>. This expansion may have been linked to the early development of the saw mill (MWB21200) that dominated the site by the time of the Fifth Edition map of 1972 <5>. On the Fifth Edition map, the dwelling had been extended at the rear.
A 1983 planning application was approved to extend and link Ivy House and convert the existing forge into office accommodation as part of New Mill Industries <6>. Further applications in 1986 were approved to convert the offices back into a single residential dwelling <7>.
