The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

Old Forge House is an unlisted, two storey, detached house with red brick walls and a tiled roof <1>. It is not shown on the Fifth Edition OS map of 1972 <2>, but was the subject of a planning application in 1983 <3>, so must have been built in the intervening decade. The 1983 planning application (83/19392/ADD), which includes a location plan showing the building, identifies it as the 'existing forge', part of the saw mill (MWB21200) that dominates the site on the Fifth Edition map.

The 1983 planning application was to convert the building into office accommodation. Further applications in 1986 (86/27065/ADD and 86/27755/ADD) were approved to convert and extend the offices into a residential house <3>.
