HER staff are working via remote access, and can be contacted using the work email and telephone numbers listed above. Consultation of the Historic Environment Record (HER) in person at the Royal Berkshire Archives is via prior appointment only. This will enable us to prepare for your visit in advance. Enquirers are requested to book visits at least 7 days in advance and should be aware that it will not be possible to arrange visits at short notice.

Visitor Facilities:

Access to the HER database and paper files is at present by appointment only via the HER Officer. Desk space is available for visitors at our office in the Royal Berkshire Archives, where we house a small reference collection of monographs, reference books and local journals. Our HER paper files are stored in a separate building so these need to be pre-ordered to be made available during a visit. When requesting to view material please provide as much detail as possible. Please note that we are undertaking an ongoing programme of digitisation of our paper archive, so many requests can now be processed remotely and may not require a visit.

Photocopying facilities are available within The Royal Berkshire Archives (charges apply).

Range of information available:

Database records on archaeological sites, monuments, buildings, designations, and historic landscape character areas within the 5 Unitary Authorities within the east of Berkshire. Paper files, unpublished archaeological reports and some reference books.

We charge for providing HER data to answer commercial enquiries; details of charges can be found on our website www.berkshirearchaeology.org.uk.HER data may be supplied subject to licence agreement.
